چکیده

Laboratory studies on deformation of olivine in response to applied stress suggest two distinct deformation mechanisms in the earth’s upper mantle: diffusion creep through diffusion of atoms along grain boundaries and dislocation creep by slipping along crystallographic glide planes. Each mechanism has very different and important consequences on the dynamical evolution of the mantle and the development of mantle fabric. Due to the lack of in situ observations, it is unclear which deformation mechanism dominates in the upper mantle, although observed seismic anisotropy in the upper mantle suggests the presence of dislocation creep. We examined the thermo-mechanical erosion of the lithosphere by thermal boundary layer instabilities in 3-D dynamical models. This study demonstrates that the seismically derived thermal structure of the Pacific lithosphere and upper mantle imposes an important constraint on the upper mantle deformation mechanism. The predominant deformation mechanism in the upper mantle is dislocation creep, consistent with observed seismic anisotropy. The acceptable activation energy range of 360–540 kJ/mol is consistent with, although at the lower end of, those determined from laboratory studies. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new analysis of experimental data on olivine rheology

[1] We present a new statistical framework to analyze rock deformation data and determine a corresponding flow law and its uncertainty. All experimental uncertainties, including inter-run bias, are taken into account in the new formalism. Our approach is based on Bayesian statistics and is implemented by a Markov chain Monte Carlo method. We apply this approach to published data on the subsolid...

Subduction to the lower mantle – a comparison between geodynamic and tomographic models

It is generally believed that subduction of lithospheric slabs is a major contribution to thermal heterogeneity in Earth’s entire mantle and provides a main driving force for mantle flow. Mantle structure can, on the one hand, be inferred from plate tectonic models of subduction history and geodynamic models of mantle flow. On the other hand, seismic tomography models provide important informat...

Stratification of anisotropy in the Pacific upper mantle

[1] On the basis of the use of broadband (25–150 s) Rayleigh wave group speeds to estimate the 2y component of azimuthal anisotropy, we present evidence for a stratification of anisotropy in the uppermost mantle at large scales across the Pacific basin. We confirm previous surface wave studies that established that the fast axis directions of azimuthal anisotropy for intermediateand long-period...

Creep Life Forecasting of Weldment

One of the yet unresolved engineering problems is forecasting the creep lives of weldment in a pragmatic way with sufficient accuracy. There are number of obstacles to circumvent including: complex material behavior, lack of accurate knowledge about the creep material behavior specially about the heat affected zones (HAZ),accurate and multi-axial creep damage models, etc. In general, creep life...

Dislocation-accommodated grain boundary sliding as the major deformation mechanism of olivine in the Earth’s upper mantle

Understanding the deformation mechanisms of olivine is important for addressing the dynamic processes in Earth's upper mantle. It has been thought that dislocation creep is the dominant mechanism because of extrapolated laboratory data on the plasticity of olivine at pressures below 0.5 GPa. However, we found that dislocation-accommodated grain boundary sliding (DisGBS), rather than dislocation...
